Hello hello! My name is Timothy Ruth and I

am a game designer.

That may be too vague, given the career possibilities,

so allow me to clarify.

I enjoy the art of Level Design the most.

Followed by Level Art and Narrative Design.

I’ve spent two years, so far, at Full Sail University working on a Bachelors in Game Design. A slightly bumpy road, for sure, as the art of game design is not a simple one. I knew before hand that game design was a complex problem, but during the course of my education I learned how vast it truly is.

So far I have made about seven different video game levels on top of three analog games. I definitely prefer designing video games over analog. Video games have a limitless potential, depending on how it’s developed, but analog games have too much limitation for my tastes. I truly love the freedom and endless boundaries that designing video games gives me.

As someone born in the 90’s, I grew up in a wonderful era of videos games. My first console was the Nintendo 64, and from that day I played all the Nintendo systems except the Wii U. That said, Nintendo is one of my biggest inspirations. I love the cheerfulness and focus on fun gameplay that a lot of Nintendo titles focus on.

When it comes to game design my main passion is Level Design work. The ins and outs of an area interest me, and I love finding secrets. I have also always loved building games. I played Minecraft since early Alpha and have played dozens upon dozens of sandbox games over the decade. Creative and adventure games aren’t the only ones that interest me, however.

RPGs and story based games are also on my list. The Persona/Soul Hacker series, Pokémon, and Fire Emblem series are also games I played growing up. To be frank, I like to dabble a lot and see what kinds of games are out there, so I’ve come to like a lot of game genres.

Aside from my game design endeavors, I also have an Honors Associates of Art in English. I spent two whole years focused on research, writing, and presentation at Lone Star Honors College. Was granted the Chancellors Fellowship Award and given two Excellence Awards for my work during those two years. It was an enjoyable time of my life and I keep looking back at a very ironic fact:

All my research projects were focused on various aspects of video games.

I did projects studying the history of the fabled console wars and cultural/historical analyses of various games. Despite all this, I still consider myself naïve to much of what gaming culture has to offer. There is not only a deep history but a diverse history to gaming that branches off between the consoles and companies.

The biggest hurdle I have found to truly understanding video games was the reality that playing hundreds of games doesn’t mean I can make a video game on that knowledge alone.
